Chinese Herbal Medicine

dreamstime_11104428Chinese herbs consist of natural dried leaves, flowers, roots and bark. Each has its own specific medicinal characteristics and actions upon the body to treat disease and they work by restoring harmony within the body by treating the ‘root’ of the presenting disorder. The prescription is based on the same diagnosis as acupuncture and the number and dosage of the herbs is personally tailored to work in combination to increase the effectiveness of the therapy.

The majority of conditions treated by acupuncture can also be treated with Chinese herbs and in many cases it is best to combine the two in a treatment course. However, herbal medicine is particularly effective for certain disorders.

Chinese herbal medicine is able to successfully treat a wide range of complaints and is commonly used for:

  • Allergies
  • Chronic fatigue and ME
  • Gynaecological & Menstrual conditions: painful periods; Endometriosis; PMT; irregular periods; scanty periods; fibroids; Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
  • Peri-menopausal & menopausal symptoms
  • Fertility treatment
  • Depression, anxiety and stress related conditions
  • Skin complaints: eczema, psoriasis and acne
  • Digestive disorders such as IBS and constipation
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis
  • Respiratory disorders.
  • Migraine

The herbs come in 3 forms. Traditionally the loose dried herbs are decocted (boiled) and drunk as a tea. However, they now come as powdered or granulated herbs (a dried preparation of the decocted herb) and pills or capsules, making them more convenient to take. You will be advised on how long to take the prescription for and how many times a day to take it. The prescription is reviewed at every session and altered if necessary.
